Peter De Rome's film career started as a private affair. Picking up an 8mm camera in the mid-'60s, De Rome produced a set of painstakingly crafted, atmospheric sexual scenarios for the amusement of himself and his friends. After much urging, he entered one of the shorts, Hot Pants, to the 1971 Wet Dream Film Festival in Amsterdam. The film took first prize. Hand and Hand Films producer Jack Deveau saw the films and convinced De Rome to collect several the shorts, blow them up to 16mm, and release them commercially as The Erotic Films Of Peter De Rome. De Rome shot most of the films over a period of five years, in France, Spain, England, and the US. The edgy subway-sex study Underground was shot especially for the collection. Aaron's Adventures in Ukraine 1 is the first video I filmed in Ukraine. After the success I had in Russia last year, I naturally assumed Ukraine would be just as wild. Right? Wrong. Always in search of sexual decadence, my latest trip found me happily filming in Thailand. I ran into a lot of interesting cultural differences, not the least of which is that Thai guys are extremely shy around each other. They may show off everything (and I mean everything!) in the go-go bars, but when it comes to appearing on video it was extremely difficult to get them to perform with each other. I was beginning a filming trip in which I was going to have to appear in every scene. I shuddered with excitement at having that much sex (and becoming that sexually exhausted...) Another interesting quirk about Thai boys and porn is that while they are extremely easy to recruit (even easier than the Russian boys if such a thing is possible), they are very unprepared once they get there. Many of the Thai boys had a slightly wide-eyed look on their face during the filming. Often I had to take breaks to teach them the basics of porn (ie; you can't just lie there, you have to suck dick, etc.) Unlike here in the States, the Thai rentboy community simply does not include a basic working knowledge of what you do on a porn tape. The result of this is that the boys came out of their shell to a greater or lesser degree, although I usually had to coax it out of them. Meaning I spend a lot of time servicing them. Sometimes that's how a scene remains, and sometimes they get into being an equal sexual partner. On a few occasions the boy even took charge and made me do what he wanted! Unlike Erotikus (V0586), which is a more general history of the gay movie, this film traces the evolution of Hand In Hand and how its three founders, Jack Deveau, Robert Alvarez and Jaap Penraat, created a loose cooperative of filmmakers dedicated to the production of high quality, innovative gay erotica. The film offers behind-the-scenes explanations of how adult films are made; exclusive interviews; segments from several Hand In Hand titles; and previously unreleased material, including bloopers and outtakes. The featured films include: Left-Handed, Hand In Hand's first release, and also the first gay film ever with a full script and musical score; Peter de Rome's Hot Pants, an impressionistic short featuring a go-go boy jacking off; Ballet Down the Highway, about a trucker who falls for a ballet star; Adam & Yves, a languid love story set in Paris; Wanted: Billy the Kid, about a rambling hustler; The Night Before; Drive, a zany spy tale; Bagdad; and several others. Following the release Left-Handed, Hand In Hand filmmakers began incorporating more story into their movies in order to draw in the audience. Similarly, the camerawork evolved: the lens no long merely recorded the sex, but served to convey the greater story as well. The shooting of the now-famous 21-hour live shoot on a New York subway for Underground, a scene from The Erotic Films of Peter de Rome collection, is chronicled here. The shoot and the action it produces are outrageous. The narrator relates in detail the thrills of the whole experience, the real-life risk of being caught or arrested, the challenge of staying erect on a moving train, the technical difficulties the shoot.
